7 Ways to Prepare for an Emergency

September is "National Preparedness Month"

It's time to better prepare ourselves in case of an emergency. It can be easy to get overwhelmed when trying to figure out just what to spend our time on getting ready. My suggestion, just pick one thing to start. If after you finish that one thing you get inspired to do more, choose another. One by one, you'll be thanking yourself if and when you need it.

Here are a few suggestions to get prepared:
  • Make a car emergency supply kit. (now is a great time to make one for colder weather)
  • Make a home emergency supply kit. (flashlight, first aid, food, water, meds, multi-tool, blanket)
  • Check smoke detectors and change batteries. (change them all at once, mark your calendar)
  • Discuss safety plans with family. (where to meet, who to call for help)
  • Photocopy important documents and wallet contents. (keep in firesafe with important numbers to call)
  • Take pictures of your belongings. (an easy way to have a record for insurance)
  • Buy a firesafe, or tidy it up. (keep it locked, file important documents)
